I am asked all the time by supervisors why I focus a lot of my lectures on the basics of leadership. The answer is simple. Before you can lead others you must know the level of your skill set. It is not a one-time learning exercise, but a continuous education as you are exposed to more and more situations requiring leadership.  If you really want to become a great leader imagine you are going to teach leadership traits to the people you supervise in a classroom setting.  It is one thing to acquire skills, but quite another to teach them.  To be able to teach you must know the material frontward, backward, upside down, and inside out.  Being able to teach makes you more aware of the material, the position, and your own skill set.
